« The Iter Program »

On 28 June 2005, Japan, Russia, China, South Korea, The United States, and the European Union signed an agreement in Moscow officially recognizing the ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) construction site at Cadarache.

- This decision made after several years of international negotiations constitutes the launching of an important step in demonstrating scientific and technical feasibility in producing electricity by fusion.

- This is wonderful international recognition for Europe and France, for the Provence Alpes Côte d'Azur (PACA) region and the Pays d'Aix, and for the CEA (Centre for research on nuclear energy) teams.

«A Presentation of Iter »

It is about creating necessary conditions on earth for the production of fusion reactions which are found on the sun. To do so means creating plasma, a very hot ionised gas, controlled by intense magnetic fields.

Numerous plants throughout the world have allowed for studies of most of the technological and physics problems linked to this concept, but their size being far too small did not until now and concurrently allow for carrying out significant energy production in the long term.

The international scientific community now proposes building a new experimental machine, named ITER, capable of producing several hundred megawatts of fusion for several minutes.
